The project

Adopt a Meow needed a website that treated adoption as a process of getting to know each other and making the right match, not just a list of animal photos. We created custom content type «Animals» with 22 distinct profiles and five taxonomies for species, adoption status, gender, animal location and specific health information. This allows the visitor to explore available animals based on information that really matters before an adoption.

The rest of the architecture follows the different paths through which someone can come into contact with the rescue: adoption, hosting, volunteering, donating, support and information. A separate guide concerns cat adoption, while the hosting page includes a section «What we can and cannot promise». The donations page specifically explains that financial support covers veterinary expenses, vaccinations, microchipping and food.

Shell-iT designed and built the website pro bono, after meeting the two women who created Adopt a Meow, some of the animals looking for a home, and the Meow pet shop in Kypseli. The design follows the rescue's orange identity, with hand-drawn doodles and their own cats on the home page. On the "What we have accomplished" page, the rescue itself states that during its action more than 50 cats and 12 dogs have found homes; these are data from Adopt a Meow and not a result of the website.

What did we do in this project?

  • Custom profile for each pet – We created a separate «Animals» content type so that each available or already adopted animal has its own organized page.
  • Filters with meaningful criteria – We organized the profiles with taxonomies for species, adoption status, gender, animal location, and health information such as FIP and FIV.
  • Path to adoption – We linked animal profiles with the information and guides someone needs before deciding to adopt.
  • Content for different ways of support – We have built separate pages for hosting, volunteering, donations and other ways to support the rescue.
  • Stories of animals that found homes – We created the «Found a Home» page so that completed adoptions remain part of the rescue's story.
  • Visual identity adapted to Adopt a Meow – We transferred the orange and green palette, the hand-drawn doodles and the characteristic elements of rescue to the website.
  • Implementation with GenerateBlocks – We built the website entirely with GenerateBlocks, with Complianz for legal content and Google Site Kit.

The need

The introduction to Adopt a Meow began when people from the Shell-iT team got their own cats and started exchanging stories and photos with each other. Through this relationship, they met the two women who created the rescue, some of the animals looking for homes, and the Meow pet shop in Kypseli — and they suggested creating the website so that each animal would be presented with the information they needed to find a safe home and a family to stay with them.

The outcome

An organized adoption and information website, where each animal has its own profile and the different paths — adoption, hosting, volunteering, donating, and supporting — have a clear space and content.

Technical approach

WordPress with GenerateBlocks for the entire frontend and a custom content type "Animals" with five taxonomies for organizing and filtering profiles. Complianz for legal pages and Google Site Kit for connecting to Google services.
